This personal project uses misconceptions I had prior to owning hermit crabs. These misconceptions often arise in social media groups dedicated to owning and caring for hermit crabs.
Because of my familiarity with the issues surrounding hermit crab ownership, I decided to use this to create a personal project for my portfolio.
Many first-time hermit crab owners are unaware of the proper care requirements for these unique pets, leading to misconceptions and inadequate care practices. Misinformation propagated by beachfront stores and pet stores contributes to this problem, resulting in suboptimal living conditions for hermit crabs and potential harm to their well-being.
Developing an eLearning course and accompanying infographic specifically tailored for first-time hermit crab owners will address the lack of knowledge and misconceptions surrounding hermit crab care. By providing accurate information and practical guidance, we aim to empower new and potential hermit crab owners to create suitable environments and care routines for their pets, promoting their health and well-being.
Understand the natural habitat and behavior of hermit crabs.
Identify appropriate housing requirements, including tank size, substrate, and humidity levels.
Recognize proper diet and nutrition for hermit crabs, including suitable foods and feeding frequency.
Learn how to create a safe and stimulating environment for hermit crabs, including providing proper temperature and lighting.
I used Mindmeister to develop the following Action Map. This brainstrom session helped me identify explicit misconceptions to target during the instructional design.
I used Articulate Rise 360 to develop a storyboard prototype. The published version is also useable as a micro-learning tool.
Designed with Canva, the infographic pictured is intended to briefly explain or review some of the basics of hermit crab care.
